The Hephaisteion was built for the gods Athena and Hephaistos. Hephaistos is the god of the forge and his temple overlooks many forges and workshops. Athena is the patron of the city. Hephaistos too is important to Athens. He is the father of Erechtheus, who was an early king of the city.
